My battle with being overweight began when I was 18 years old. At my heaviest, I weighed as much as 150 pounds (approximately 68 kilograms). In an attempt to look slimmer, I wore only black clothes. I took weight-loss pills but as soon as I stopped taking the pills, my weight crept back up. Gradually, I lost hope of losing weight along with my self-esteem.
Change in Dietary Habits
In October 2015, I came to Bodhi Meditation to chant for my mother, hoping to improve her failing health. When I learned of the 8.5-Day Health & Happiness Retreat, I enrolled immediately. A surprise awaited me: My wish of losing weight was fulfilled through my participation in the Retreat.
On the first day of the Retreat, my appetite changed. I didn’t feel hungry so I skipped breakfast and lunch. In the evening, I ate only vegetables and a small bowl of rice. My diet remained simple and healthful throughout the Retreat. I lost a total of five pounds by the end of the Retreat.
In the past, I preferred beef and pork steaks. However, after the Retreat, I favored lighter and simpler meals. Now with mindful eating, I stop when I am about 70 percent full. This is unlike the past, where I ate without much self-control. As my dietary habits changed, my temperament also changed, becoming calmer and more peaceful.
A New Healthful Habit: Meditation
The positive changes I experienced gave me confidence in meditation. I committed to a regimen. Over a year of practicing meditation, I lost 20 pounds. I have maintained a healthy weight of 130 pounds (approximately 59 kilograms). The beautiful clothing that was once out of reach is now a part of my life. I am more confident and happier than ever before.
An Additional Unexpected and Joyful Benefit: Pain-Free Menstruation
Meditation has also greatly alleviated my dysmenorrhea. For 20 years, my menstruation was accompanied by tremendous pain. Although I took painkillers, menstrual symptoms still significantly affected my life and work. After practicing meditation for six months, I no longer experienced dysmenorrhea. My life is as balanced as can be.
Bodhi Meditation opened me to a new way of living, and for that I am beyond grateful and full of joy.
